"Rolle Back" Sculpture by Karalla

The Process:

A roll of raw canvas is unrolled.  Pigment and color are scrubbed into and through its fibers.  Ten days soaking and then 20 days air-drying. Then the gym works out... The entire canvas is torn into strips and color-coded. This is the start of the roll back.  The roll is held together with a wire to drop in a pear shape or a hard round circle depending on how the rolling was created.

This is the first attempt that I know of that explores the inside of the canvas.  We have painted on the front and the back of the canvas, but never the inside. Where as we ourselves work on canvas to expose our insides, it is the canvas itself that exposes its inside...

A short documentary film on the process of the making of a Rolle, originally shot on 16mm, is available. (Video)
